Continue on to Grossbottwar which is again another excellent wine growing area, through Steinheim an der Murr with its museum of prehistoric man (a 1/4 million year old human skull was found in the quarry there), and on to Marbach am Neckar, the birthplace of the poet Schiller and there is his birthhouse and archives. Just a lovely drive in September. Another excellent drive is to head south out of Stuttgart on Hwy 2. Tuebingen. Return to the highway, and the road to Gomadingen is either there or very close nearby. You will pass through Offenhausen (the restaurant there on the right is excellent that is in front of the horse museum, and you can visit the quiet pool in the former monastery's garden which is a source of the Grosse Lauter River), and at Gomadingen follow the signs for Gestuet Marbach (Marbach stables, Germany's oldest state stables where you can visit the magnificent stallions in their stalls- www. The bread in the stall across the road is excellent. Continue on down the idyllic Grosse Lauter and there is one of Germany's highest concentrations of castle ruins, most of which are visitable. Leave the river following the signs to Hayingen and continue on to Zwiefalten and its magnificent former abbey church.
Along this lovely now deserted road there will be Friedrichshoehle, a cave only enter- able by boat. The brewery in Zwiefalten is another good place to eat. Continue on down the road to the Danube River, and head to the left to Obermarchtal, a monastery with a nice church. A little further in this direction is Mochental Palace, an excellent palace which has an art gallery and also a broom museum.
Return down the river and Riedlingen has a pleasant oldtown. A very short way further down 3. Ertingen, turn right to Binzwangen and there left to Hundersingen. There is a reconstructed Celtic Village.
It's actual history goes back a long ways to Ice Age times 3. Swabian Alb. Then throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages there were again settlements, and more recently the Roman ones.
